Levels

At Old Portsmouth College our group classes are organised into different levels following the Common European Framework (CEFR).

A1 (Elementary)

What You Can Do:

    • Understand very basic phrases and common expressions.
    • Introduce yourself and ask simple questions (e.g., “What’s your name?”).
    • Write short, basic sentences like filling in forms or sending a short postcard.

A2 (Pre-Intermediate)

What You Can Do:

    • Understand simple conversations about everyday topics (e.g., shopping, family).
    • Talk about basic needs and routine tasks.
    • Write short, simple notes or messages about familiar topics.

B1 (Intermediate)

What You Can Do:

    • Understand the main ideas in conversations or texts about work, school, or leisure.
    • Manage most situations while travelling in an English-speaking country.
    • Write clear and simple texts about your experiences or plans.

B2 (Upper-Intermediate)

What You Can Do:

  • Understand detailed conversations, TV programmes, or articles about familiar topics.
  • Speak confidently about your opinions and explain your thoughts clearly.
  • Write well-structured and detailed texts, like essays or reports.

C1 (Advanced)

What You Can Do:

    • Understand complex ideas in long conversations, presentations, or articles.
    • Speak fluently and express yourself naturally on both familiar and unfamiliar topics.
    • Write professional, detailed, and organised texts, such as reports or academic essays.
